Celadonia Curry, better known as Swoon, is a pioneering street artist in a field traditionally dominated by men. Classically trained as a visual artist and printmaker, she has spent the last 15+ years exploring the relationship between people and their built environments.
Swoon started her street art in 1999 while attending the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Her paper-cut portraits and cityscapes were illegally pasted in neglected parts of the city. Although they were meant to disintegrate, they soon started gaining attention from gallerists and museum curators. Sarah Suzuki, associate curator at the Museum of Modern Art said “When you look at the work of a lot of her peers, hers stands apart."
The work offered here is an excellent example featuring Edline, a highly desirable subject matter the artist has returned to a number of times. It is pencil signed and numbered 38 from an edition of 50.
Swoon's work has been collected and shown internationally at galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Brooklyn Museum; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; and the São Paulo Museum of Art and many others.
