Lidded Vessel
Yellowheart and Wenge turned wood
6” High
Not only did Michael Mode’s turned wood vessels catch my attention, they caught the attention of the Detroit Institute of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and numerous other institutions throughout the country.
Self taught artist Mode (American, b. 1946), started his career making vessels with lids - a departure from the already well known wood turners of the time that focused almost exclusively on bowls. He thought the geometries of the design made them less of a functional object, and more a work of art. He was right.
His focus continues to be on the refinement of the surfaces and the finish. This is apparent in the piece offered here with the alternating “woven” woods of Yellowheart and Wenge that provide a beautiful contrast in their geometric design.
Mode continues to make work in his studio in New Haven, Vermont. In addition to the numerous institutional collections, Mode’s work continues to enter private collections throughout the world. This is yet another opportunity to own an important work of contemporary design at a very accessible price point.
